March 1, 2008

This charming 1930s Colonial will get a new 2-car garage with a second story master suite above, as well as an addition off the back which will include a kitchen and mudroom.

A 3-D rendering of the proposed
new front of the home.

The existing cramped kitchen will be
replaced by a larger kitchen
in the new addition.

The back wall of the existing
dining room will be opened up to the
new kitchen/mudroom addition.

April 4, 2008

Removing the old garage to make way
for the new garage and master suite.

A view of the side of the house.
The garage is gone.

Footings are poured for the
kitchen and mudroom addition at the
back of the house.

The foundation walls go up.

April 10, 2008

After the dust protection is set up,
interior demolition begins.

A new interior beam is installed
to open up the existing living room
and dining room.

Now the dining room wall is opened up
to what will eventually become the new
kitchen/mudroom addition.

April 30, 2008

A new concrete slab for the garage.

The kitchen and mudroom addition
framing is proceeding nicely.

Setting the structural steel beam
above the garage area.

May 14, 2008

Lead carpenter, Brian Mills, framing the
2nd floor master suite, above the garage.
What do you think of his hat?

The roof over the kitchen/mudroom
addition at the back of the house.

The kitchen/mudroom roof is ready
to receive shingles. The walls of the 2nd floor
master suite are going up.

May 21, 2008

Beginning to build the roof on
the 2nd story master suite.

The rafters go up.
(That’s Phillip up there.)

June 9, 2008

Both additions now have their roofs . . .

. . . and siding.

The new front elevation. (Remember what it
looked like before?)

June 16, 2008

Now we move inside. Here’s a
photo of the framing for the
skylight in the master bathroom.

The framing for the new dormer
in the master bedroom.

Downstairs, we are building new
archways that echo the form
of the existing ones.

The new kitchen is beginning to
take shape.

When it’s completed, the kitchen will look
something like this — with an open space plan,
more storage, efficient work triangle, and
peninsula work space.

June 20, 2008

Here the spray foam insulation has
been added to the attic. . .

. . . and the first floor. Both are
now ready to receive drywall.

July 9, 2008

Upstairs…

….and down. Quite a
difference, don’t you think?

This is how the folks who tape
and mud the drywall, do it.

July 15, 2008

This soon-to-be grand house
now needs a grand entrance (and a new coat
of paint – but that will come later).

Here comes the portico!

Almost finished….

There. That’s better!  We’ll
refinish the door and then the
new entry will be done.

While all that work is going on
outside, inside, a new oak floor is being
laid in the dining room and kitchen.

July 21, 2008

The new oak floor has been
finished to perfectly blend with
the original oak flooring in the living room.

Now that the flooring has been
completed, we can start to install the
cabinets in the kitchen.

August 14, 2008

After the base cabinets, come the
countertops – in this case, a beautiful
quartz top by Cambria.

Next we install the black slate
backsplash and the slide-in range.

As the cabinets are being
installed inside, we’ve been doing a lot of
work on the exterior. Here you can see
that the house has been painted, and
we’ve poured a new concrete driveway and
walkway to the front entrance.

September 15, 2008 – COMPLETE!

The dormer creates a cozy spot in the
new master suite.

Looking from the new mudroom
into the kitchen.

Here’s a view of the kitchen now open
to the dining room, with breakfast bar
and a view to the backyard. . .

. . . and the happy owners.
