Our clients love their 1920s Dutch Colonial in Burns Park; the kitchen however… well, it’s about to get a gorgeous upgrade. The kitchen remodel of this classic Ann Arbor home will include a dramatic black and white Cambria Bentley island, Riverwood Hickory cabinets and Zellige handcrafted clay tile for the backsplash. Please Check here often to see how the Rochman Design Build team will transform the current kitchen into a gorgeous and dramatic modern farmhouse kitchen.

The first week is usually the most dramatic change, going from a full, lived in kitchen to down to studs.
both yikes! and yay! : )

While Emily is demoing the soffits on her way to the studs, John is tackling the next stage of demo.

And outside, trailer is handily parked right under the window for John’s easy discard (well, at least the smaller pieces).

All cleaned up! Next?

Owner, Gary Rochman, is checking in on the jobsite.

The existing subfloor was in such bad shape that we had to rebuild it
to accommodate the new oak floor going over it.

It’s so hard being a little person and not being allowed to hang out with the crew while they work : (
But maybe I can say hi from down here… #CutenessBeyondWords

We’ve put in all new nailers to accommodate the future cabinetry.

New windows are in : )

New ceiling is installed on existing steel beam. Since the new ceiling is higher than original, 3 rows of brick had to be added above the fireplace. The hearth was removed from fireplace and patched back in. It is now ready for a gas insert fireplace.

Where the new ceiling intersects the roof line, it goes from being level to following the pitch of the roof. All the while, reworked framing is installed around the existing chimney.

New windows are in the new window openings in the existing wall.
The horizontal blocking is there to accommodate a future custom bench.

In this picture you can see better how the ceiling tails down with the roof line.

The small wooden contraption on the floor at the bottom left is to protect the ductwork from being stepped on. It is a future heat vent in the toe kick of the sink cabinet.
